A backyard picnic is never complete without homemade ice cream. My family loves getting together on a hot summer day and making homemade ice cream. Cousins, Uncles, Aunts, Brother, Sisters, kids and all, we love getting out the ice cream maker and putting it to work. And it does do the work. With the new ice cream makers on the market today, there is no work for us to do. Just mix the ingredients, chill for awhile if you wish, pour into the canister of the ice cream maker and push the button. At that point we can sit back and relax and visit while the ice cream maker is doing its job.
We have to make a decision on what flavor to make, and of course, there are sometimes someone who wants a different flavor than the rest but that is not a problem, because you can make the ice cream ahead of time and keep it in the freezer. If some want strawberry ice cream and others want chocolate, or vanilla, we just make one flavor the day before and keep it in the freezer. It will improve the ice cream to let it sit in the freezer and age anyway. Then it doesn’t take long to make the other requested flavor on the day that we get together to eat it. I have seen the ice cream makers that make consecutive batches of ice cream which would work well for large groups of people. The ice cream maker that we have will also make other frozen desserts besides ice cream. We sometimes make frozen yogurt or gelato. Sometimes on the weekends when we have only grown ups over we make frozen cocktails. Our fully automated ice cream maker only takes minutes to make any frozen dessert.
We also have gel ice cream maker that the kids like to make ice cream in. It has a gel canister that we keep in the freezer. And the kids know how to mix milk etc. to make ice cream, so at times they will mix it up and pour it into the gel canister. The gel canister that we have is a play and toss, so the kids just take it outside and toss it around to keep the ice cream mix moving, which allows it to freeze smoothly. You can also buy the gel canister that has the paddles inside the canister to turn the mixture.
There is nothing better than a quart or two of homemade ice cream or sorbet or frozen yogurt, on a hot summer day. Especially if you have been out in the sun jogging or maybe working in the yard. Even sitting by the pool can make you wish for something cold to eat, or drink. My family lives for the times we can get together and enjoy each others company. The home make ice cream is a great bonus, that also makes our time together so enjoyable. I know the kids will grow and remember all of the good times we have.
